INTRODUCTION
------------
Way back in the mists of time there was a top little 8-bit computer
called the Spectrum. It wasn't the best equipped beast in the world, but
it was fun to use, it was cheap, and it had a built in programming
language. And lo, people did write their own crappy little games for it,
which weren't world beaters, but were fun none the less. After the poor
little Speccy was pronounced dead by 'They Who Control The World
Markets', most people forgot about programming their computers and just
set about playing games instead, 'cos it required less brains and also
because most computers didn't come with a built-in language (or a
keyboard, in the case of some dumb c*nsoles). And a little light went
out in the world.

Way back in the early days of the Speccy, a company called Cascade
decided it would be a smart money-spinning idea to produce the biggest
compilation of Spectrum games ever. This was called Cassette 50, and
should by rights have been the best compilation ever. However, instead
of giving you Speccy classics like Manic Miner or Jetpac for your cash,
you got fifty incredibly dodgy BASIC programs, each one taking less than
a minute to load and usually lasting the same amount of time on your
Speccy before you were bored of it and reset!

Zooming back to present day, the Speccy is now mainly a virtual machine
(emulated on various bigger, although not necessarily better,
computers). But what should I discover in amongst the Spectrum classics
one day? A copy of Cassette 50, converted in its entirety to run under
an emulator. And it's just as bad these days!

Having uploaded this file to NVG, I happened upon an idea. Wouldn't it
be fun to knock together a similar compilation of our own in order to
prove that we could produce a better compilation than Cascade when we
were TRYING to make the games crap!

The Comp.Sys.Sinclair Crap Games Compilation was born!

WHAT THE HELL IS IT?
--------------------
This compilation is made up of contributions from the readers of
comp.sys.sinclair. They were asked to contribute games they had written
many moons ago (and which they thought were crap) or to write new stuff
with the specific intention of making it as crap as possible. This
compilation is the fruits of their labour! (If this compilation really
was a fruit, it would probably be something ugly and horrible. Probably
better to describe it as a vegetable, 'cos then it could be a sprout!)

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS
------------------
You'll need an emulator, for one! It should also be possible to transfer
these games to a real Speccy, but please don't ask me how 'cos if you
don't know already you don't have the tools to do it! Okay?

Most of the games will run on a bog-standard 48k Spectrum, although
there is a directory of 128 versions of three of the progs...! If your
emulator can't handle the 128, then you still play all of the stuff -
the 128 snaps are a kind of 'bonus'.

The games are all stored as .SNA format snapshot files. This is the
most convenient format, as it is most widely supported throughout the
emulator community. There should be no problem converting these files to
other formats if you should wish to.... The only snaps not stored as
.SNA files are the 128k snapshots, which are stored as .Z80 files. This
shouldn't be a problem, as all 128k emulators that I am aware of can
load Z80 snapshots.

STOP PRESS: As I was unable to preserve the wonderful loading screens
for Build That Tower and Shoot That Tank when I made the snapshots, I
have included the original .TAP file of these two games so that people
with .TAP supporting emulators can see them. Hope you like 'em!

True to Cassette 50 style, all of the snapshots have been given three
letter filenames! If this is annoying, GOOD! It was meant to be....! ;-)

All of the 48k snaps have been tested with Z80 and JPP on a PeeCee. They
all work, so I guess they should be pretty much okay on any emulator (I
mean, it's not like the games are really complex and use non-standard
programming techniques or anything!). The 128 snaps have all been tested
with Z80. They all work there, but I don't know about other 128
emulators, you'll have to give them a shot and find out!

BUT THESE GAMES ARE CRAP!
-------------------------
They're meant to be, silly! Don't expect these games to change your
life, they're not supposed to be the Speccy equivalent of Doom! They're
supposed to be a nostalgic trip back to the days when graphics weren't
everything and anyone could knock up a quick game in about half an hour.
And don't judge the Speccy on these titles either, there was
approximately 9,000,000 incredibly better games available. If you have
any comments or complaints, I guess you better direct them to me or to
the guys who wrote the games! But we won't take any notice of nasty
comments.

THE THANKYOU LIST
-----------------
Thanks to everyone who has helped me to organise this. It's been quite
enlightening just how much support you can raise from a haggard old
bunch of Speccy enthusiasts! I hope you all enjoy playing the games as
much as I've enjoyed compiling this collection, and if you think they're
crap then at least you can have a laugh at them, eh? Oh yeah, and in
true crap traditions, although this was originally intended to be called
the CSS Crap 50 Compilation, it does actually include 60 programs. Not
ALL of them are games, so I guess you could say there were only about 50
here.... I just couldn't choose 50 to go in, so I thought I'd stick 'em
all in and to hell with it!

A special thanks must also go to my long-suffering fiancee Becky, who
has had an especially hard time these last few months putting up with
long uninterruptable tunes and nasty bleeps n' farts coming from the PC
while she's trying to relax. Needless to say, I was often relieved
that Z80 includes a 'Sound Off' option, as it helped me to keep alive my
hopes of ever having children. ;-)

Finally, I'd just like to say that if you enjoyed the crap compilation,
why not drop me a line and show me your appreciation? I'd love to hear
what people think of some of the games in here.... Hell, someone might
even LIKE some of them! ;-)

Stay slinky, Spec-chums.....!

Blood.

THE INSTRUCTIONS
----------------
Here are the instructions for the games. These are taken either
directly from the game, directly from the author, or made up off the top
of my head in a half-baked attempt to describe them. Or a combination
of some or all of those. Confused? Good.

The instructions are best used if you print them out and read the blurb
for a game JUST BEFORE you run it, so the description is still fresh in
your mind. Wouldn't want you to get all confused with so many games to
play would we? ;-)

Oh yeah, and when I was writing these I was wearing my advertiser's hat
and rose-tinted spectacles.... In other words, don't believe EVERYTHING
you read....! Ah, the advertisements of yore.....

robot has taken over the city, and you are the only one left who gives
a damn. You must battle through the city being careful not to enter
the dark labyrinth of terror, for if you do, you may never escape.

you can only take one hit. Be careful.

6) Adventure in Bristol
-----------------------
Filename : BRI.SNA
Who to blame : Garry, 100712.3652@compuserve.com

DIE OF SHOCK as you experience this devastating piece of software! While
other lower quality games may take you to distant alien worlds or far
distant times, Adventure in Bristol is the first adventure to ever dare
take you as far as BRISTOL!!!! Billions of locations, thousands of
gigabytes of text and unbeliveable sound make this one of the finest
text adventures ever produced since the beginning of time. Give Moses
the choice between this game and the ten commandments, and we'd all be
sinning like bloody hell but satisfied on the game front!

The author says :
"Adventure In Bristol" is a blend of many different adventure games of
the time. For example, it has the depth of "Planet of Death", the
vocabulary of a Scott Adams adventure, the atmospheric descriptions of
"The Hobbit", the sheer speed of execution of "Lord Of The Rings", logic
to rival "Ship Of Doom" and a lack of bugs to compare with "Kentilla".
A masterpiece!

FLUID GAMEPLAY, this is one of the best looking games you'll EVER see!
You simply won't believe the SPEED that things FLY around the screen!
Couple that with FANTASTIC sound effects and ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
routines originally developed by NASA and you've got one F%?! of a game!
What more can we say?

9) Cantona Football
-------------------
Filename : CAN.SNA
Who to blame : Ian (Putneyman) Coates, COATES@VAX.LSE.AC.UK

Ian does a fine job of describing his game, so I'll have a rest and let
him do all the hard work for a couple of minutes! Over to Ian.....

Fed up with those boring games where you have to kick the football up the
screen to the opponent's goal ??? Well this is the answer - no footballs,
no goals, no cups and no Jimmy Hill.

You are Eric Cantona. Your mission is to be sent off the field as soon as
possible after the game has started (it is considered bad taste in France
to be sent off before the whistle). You control Eric as he moves around the
field in search of his victims, but make sure your tackle is hard enough
to cause hospitalisation and you'll lose points if the referee has his
back to you !

SPECIAL FEATURES IN THIS GAME:
  - Full 16 colour support (excellent use of BRIGHT (yet again))
  - Full sound support (the theme to "Blackadder" as you've never heard it
before. What is has to do with the game is beyond me!)
  - More high-res graphics (if you can call user defined blocks "high-res")
  - A lot of flicker
  - The same artificial intelligence system that won so many awards when it
was first revealed in "Whale Hunt". (Yup, it's the RND command again !)
  - Current 1993/94 league teams
  - Actual strip colours (as far as the colour clash will allow :)
(Not really relevant, but last night in the Tube club, Bristol, there was
this girl who had turned an Arsenal strip from about 5 years ago in to a
dress - she looked well stupid. I suppose it could have been Ian Wright
    in disguise though)
  - The amazing fact that even though there are fewer lines of code in this
game, the file is still 10K larger than "Whale Hunt" !
  - Super efficient keyboard reading routines (NOT !)...keep your finger on
the key - it computer will respond eventually !!! (again....OK, OK - I
can't write any decent keyboard routines !)

OBJECTIVE: Get sent off the pitch as quickly as possible

NOTE: The Old Trafford groundsman has said that every 24 minutes the game will
need to be paused so that the centre circle can be repainted. Please
      be patient.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID:
"The boot to the back of the head is my favourite move" - Vinny Jones
"Je suis un fouler" - Eric Cantona
"Do I like that" - Graham Taylor
"Can you beat my record of twice in 2 matches ?" - Eric Cantona
"Stunning...seeing the blood spurt out as Cantona separates the Swindon
player's head from his neck is the most realistic I've ever seen"
                                                 - Michael Winner

way!

11) Castle
----------

MILLION WORDS will push your brain to the very limits! You'll never

DISNEY-QUALITY CARTOON GRAPHICS make this one of the BEST LOOKING
EDUTAINMENT packages in the WORLD! You'll want to play this one OVER AND
OVER AGAIN, even when you can type at 2000 words per minute!

The author said of his creation :
Another attempt at a keyboard tutor. Did I have education on the brain
when I wrote these or what?

13) Chess
---------
Filename : CHS.SNA
Who to blame : Ian Collier, Ian.Collier(a)comlab.ox.ac.uk

thrashes you AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN! The AI is SO GOOD that experts
predict the game will become self-aware and DESTROY THE WORLD if left
running overnight! Don't say we didn't warn you!

The author said of his creation :
Basically a direct translation of 1K ZX81 chess with slightly better
graphics. Beware, you have to type the number first rather than the
letter.

14) Credit Calculator
---------------------
Filename : CRD.SNA
Who to blame : Steve Lake, Steve.Lake@brunel.ac.uk

Who'd have thought that CASH could be so much fun?! Spontaneously
combust with pleasure as you delve into the devious world of debt with
Credit Calculator, the most accurate credit sim ever written! See
calculations performed at the speed of light, gasp as you realise you're
broke, and soil your trousers in disbelief as you witness the BASIC
scrolling message!

The author says :
A really odd program that I did as a project for my computer studies
class at school. Basically you bung in how much money you had, how much
you have spent and how much you have earned and it works out how much
you've got now.

Interesting features: A scrolly message written in BASIC! which I *ahem*
borrowed from Advanced Lawnmower Simulator.

17) Einstein
------------
Filename : EIN.SNA
Who to blame : Ian Collier, Ian.Collier(a)comlab.ox.ac.uk

From the author of Chess comes another FANTASTIC strategy game, a game
SO COMPLEX that it DEFIES DESCRIPTION! Even the author has a hard time
working out what you have to do! Programmed using new MIND READING
techniques, this game was WRENCHED FROM THE SUBCONSCIOUS of the author
while he was watching NEIGHBOURS one night! Destroy ALL of your brain
cells trying to beat this one!

The author describes the game thus :
A solitaire puzzle. The answer to the first question is one of O, Y, G
and B. The board contains coloured pegs surrounded by a coloured circle.
The idea is to move the pegs so that in the final position the pegs and
circles match. Each move consists of taking the top peg of one column and
moving it to the top of another column. Note: do not start this game with
BRIGHT 1 turned on or it won't work.

18) Filler
----------
Filename : FIL.SNA
Who to blame : Damion Yates, thdb86%teach@dcs.shef.ac.uk

SQUEEZED into a humble Speccy! In fact, it's so complex that EVEN THE
AUTHOR DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY IT PROPERLY!!!! I'm giving up now while
I've still got my SANITY!

The author describes the game thus :
A game for two players. A move consists of emptying a numbered receptacle
and distributing the seeds. If the last seed lands in a receptacle on the
opposing side containing one or two seeds then you capture them. You then
also capture the adjacent ones if they contain two or three. There may be
some special case rules at the end of the game which I can't remember.

59) Washing Day
---------------

Who to blame : Garry, 100712.3652@compuserve.com

Here's a game which SINCLAIR USER though was ONLY WORTH 20 QUID! It's
blatently obvious that it's worth 2000 TIMES as much, but it's yours
here FOR FREE! How could we ever be so GENEROUS?!?!? Answer? We saved
cash on the advertising by ripping the instructions direct from SU! Ha!

Instructions (not ripped from SU honest guvnor) :
Time to do the weekly chores, and wash all those smelly jeans and
pinafores. You play the harassed washer in this game by Garry Lancaster
of Bristol. Use the cursor keys to move, and fetch clothes from the
clothes bin, then pegs from the peg box, and finally hang up the
washing by going to the top left corner of the line. Unfortunately a
hippopotamus lives next door, and keeps splashing mud on your clothes.
Every stain makes you more enraged.

  - High resolution graphics (if you can call user defined blocks "high-res")
  - No flicker...well...not much flicker (it took me ages to debug that one)
  - Makes full use of the little known Spectrum command "PRINT" ;-)
  - 12th generation artificial intelligence...see that whale move with all
the intelligence of the RND command
  - Highly efficient looping routines used, such that between lines 670 and
730 there are commands on every line, while lines 7500-8000 are blank !
  - User friendly character set (the bog-standard speccy one)
  - Super efficient keyboard reading routines (NOT !)...keep your finger on
